ProMIS for industry: custom simulation solutions
Accelerating surgical and corporate performance through simulation
Simulation has fast gained acceptance as a valid, cost-effective way to greatly enhance the delivery and outcomes of marketing and training activities - especially when introducing new devices and procedures.
By replicating a complex device or procedure, simulation offers companies a way to:
 Accelerate acceptance and uptake of new devices, instruments and procedures;
 Increase adoption of complex techniques,
 and ultimately increase patient safety.
The fundamental objective is to have more physicians doing more procedures more proficiently - in less time, at lower cost and at lower risk.
In two recent projects, Haptica developed simulators for Ethicon Endo-Surgery (a Johnson & Johnson company) and Microsulis Medical.

Simulation for R&D, Marketing & Training
Haptica's simulation solutions have value across the development cycle, from R&D to Marketing to Training. The ProMIS platform delivers:
Objective measurements to support the claims of a new product
 Accelerated clinical validation
An engaging, robust, cost-effective marketing tool that enables physicians to experience the benefits of the new device
Standardized, structured training with objective measurement of proficiency
 Accessible, risk-free, cost-effective training.

Ś R&D: Accelerate design verification
The ProMIS™ platform delivers a cost effective pre-clinical evaluation platform by delivering data on prototype devices. A solution may include developing anatomically accurate human models and tracking performance of new instruments within these models, thus measuring their effectiveness before they get to clinical trial stage. Comparative studies may be undertaken to show variation in performance between new and old devices.
The end result may be a faster time to market and objective measurements to support the claims of the new product.
Ť Clinical validation: Increase efficiency
ProMIS™ will deliver efficient and effective training and assessment of clinicians involved in a validation study. This will increase the speed and standardization of the process, especially if threshold performance levels are set.
In the clinical validation process ProMIS™ accelerates clinician training without involving patients. By providing objective assessment the overall standard of performance is raised - and the basis on which the device is being validated has increased standardisation and objectivity.
Ž Marketing: Accelerate acceptance and uptake through effective demonstration
ProMIS™ delivers a robust, portable and cost-effective marketing and training tool. It is an ideal platform to demonstrate how new devices work: it is engaging and enables demonstration, practice and training in the same unit. Sales people who use ProMIS™ in demonstrations enable physicians to experience the benefits of the new device, as well as receive standardised guidance on how to use the new device effectively.
Ź Training: Accelerate uptake through proficiency and confidence
Simulation is the only training method that provides standardized, structured training with objective measurement of proficiency. It is also the only method of training that can be accessed anytime, anywhere and that offers risk-free, limitless practice.
Tasks are constructed for optimum learning and on-screen guidance and regular feedback make for a wholly engaging and productive experience.
While there may always be a place for cadavers and animals in training, these too have drawbacks that simulation can overcome. For example, cadavers and animals rarely display appropriate pathology: simulation can provide various scenarios and can present a more cost-effective solution.
Why the Haptica approach to simulation?
Only Haptica's simulators integrate virtual reality with real haptics and real instruments >>>. Physicians use the full range of real instruments to complete a procedure, interacting with a mix of virtual reality and physical models. All Haptica Training Simulators use a `Show, Practice, Measure' model. Physicians are guided through a procedure step-by-step, and at the end are given feedback on their performance. Feedback is based on validated measures of proficiency, including economy of movement, time taken, errors, etc.
As a training simulator, ProMIS™ has won international recognition for its innovative approach: surgeons learn on a mix of virtual and physical models and get accurate metrics on their performance. But ProMIS™ has benefits beyond training. Its open technology platform offers support for the design, validation and marketing of medical devices.
The ground-breaking technology underpinning ProMIS™ is a fusion of sensing & tracking systems, advanced video analysis, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. This enables ProMIS™ to deliver:
 Non-contact tracking of surgical instruments
A Virtual Reality(VR) simulation of the abdomen that reacts to real surgical instruments
A fully interactive 3D Augmented Reality (AR) system that blends video and interactive graphical objects
Augmented reality content creation tools for non-programmers
Awards and Clinical Validation
In 2004, Haptica won an Innovation of the Year award from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons in the U.S., and a European IST Prize from the European Council of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering and the EU Commission.
The effectiveness of the ProMIS™ system has been clinically validated by peer reviewed publications from experts in MIS, including leading researchers at Emory University, Imperial College, London and RCSI, Ireland.
