ProMIS Laparoscopic Colectomy
ProMIS™ LC, a powerful, new augmented reality simulator for Laparoscopic Colectomy.
W. Peter Geis, MD, with Derek Young of Haptica, using ProMIS LC in HALS mode

A mix of virtual and real worlds: ProMIS LC allows a surgeon to perform a complete hand-assisted or fully laparoscopic Sigmoid Colectomy on a totally simulated model, using a complete set of real instruments.
We finally have a training tool that, through the combination of real tactile feedback and virtual reality, gives the surgeon an unparalleled opportunity to practice, step by step, a Hand-assisted laparoscopic sigmoid resection." Bryan N. Butler, MD, Buffalo Medical Group.

About ProMIS LC
Augmented Reality (AR) integrates virtual and physical reality
Uses real instruments, including access devices, a range of instruments, staplers and energy devices
Tracks instruments and hand movements for performance measurement
Highly realistic surgical context and real haptics and tactile feedback via complete physical anatomic model
Guided tutorial via animations, graphics, video, audio and text
Automatic metrics and assessment of performance
 User and group records
Real haptics and real context
ProMIS LC is the first simulator to integrate virtual reality with real haptics and real instruments. Surgeons use the full range of real laparoscopic instruments to complete the procedure, interacting with a mix of virtual reality and physical models.
Show, Practice, Measure
ProMIS LC is built on a `Show, Practice, Measure' model of training. Surgeons are guided through the procedure step-by-step, and at the end are given feedback on their performance. As they work, the surgeon's instruments - and hand - are tracked as they perform the procedure. (For more on ProMIS Metrics, click here >>>) It is this combination of real and virtual worlds that enables ProMIS LC to deliver a highly realistic and engaging learning experience.
Limitless practice
For surgeons who already perform Laparoscopic Colectomy, ProMIS LC provides a focused, easy-to-use training regimen that facilitates transition to hand-assisted. For surgeons who perform Open Colectomy and who wish to take advantage of laparoscopic approaches, the simulator provides an end-to-end experience that builds skill and provides extended opportunities for practice.
Step-by-Step Procedure
ProMIS Surgical Simulator
ProMIS™ is unique in combining virtual and real worlds in the same system. Users learn, practice and measure their proficiency with real instruments on real models with real haptics and real context.
Validated
The award-winning ProMIS has become the simulator of choice for leading skills centers worldwide. Studies have validated ProMIS' effectiveness in training and assessing laparoscopic skill - including on FLS Tasks and with robotic instrumentation. These studies also show that users prefer ProMIS over VR Simulators. (Fellinger, et al 2006)
Integrates easily into the Curriculum
ProMIS is the only simulator that adapts to your curriculum: it can use Tasks designed locally and can use the SAGES/ACS Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery program. Three studies published at SAGES 2006 validated ProMIS as a measurement tool for FLS and concluded that "ProMIS FLS scores are excellent predictors of scores in the standard FLS simulator. (McCluney et al, P237).
In addition, ProMIS' own Basic Skills Program can be adapted to suit local needs through its unique Open Module and ability to set proficiency levels.
Easy to set up and use
ProMIS™ scores consistently high with users and administrators. In a recent study that compared ProMIS with a VR simulator, "Scores for ProMIS were significantly higher for overall realism, thread behavior, reflection of clinical ability, and overall educational value." (Fellinger, et al, P224)
Networked for user records
For administrators, ProMIS™ is easy to store, set up and has an outstanding track record in terms of robustness and consistent performance. User records are easily accessed and group performance reports are easily generated. A networked system is available that enables data from more than one ProMIS simulator to be gathered quickly and easily on a single server.
